Erehwon
As I sit huddled by my fireplace because the heater died on a 17 degree morning, I am reminded of the wide selection of undergarments, thermals, and layering pieces at Erehwon, located at Greenway Station. Just check out the great pair below...I ask you, does he look cold? (model not included)

Neenas-Apparel for Movement
Neena's is a great little boutique on Parmenter Street in Middleton, WI. The garments are designed for women who want to look good while on the move (let's face it, Ladies...we are always on the move!). Forget sweats and tees! Neena's demonstrates that style does not have to be sacrificed for comfort. But don't take my word for it, check out their website and visit their Facebook Page. Support local retailers to keep Wisconsin thriving!

Hello Strangers!!
Well, yes, I took the Summer off. I know how much you missed me...and yes, Brian, I was remiss (there is always one in the bunch ready to point out your faults, isn't there?...love you anyway, Brian).
So I am back and ready to talk shop. First order of business, CLEAN YOUR CLOSETS! It's a new season, a new start, so bag up all those clothes you haven't worn in a couple of years and donate them to someone who will wear them. Dry clean your outerwear (or use a home dry cleaning product, which is what I do), freshen up those sweaters, break out the "sweater shaver", clean last year's salt build-up off of your boots (shame on you for leaving it there in the first place), and make room for a few new additions.
Ladies, look over your purses...you may want to switch out the Summer bag. For some reason, Fall says, "big purse". I am not sure why, but it does, so there you have it. Summer says, "Purse big enough to hold your lip gloss, credit card, business cards, and mints", and Fall says, "Make room for big holiday shopping wallets, gloves, umbrella (yes, I can fit my umbrella in some of my purses...what of it?), and kid's junk (lots of junk), and the IPad" (so you can play Scrabble while sitting through any one of the numerous child-driven after school activities).
Men, there is a fairly good chance your shoes need an update. The whole Birkenstock w/sock, dress pant thing is not working...put...the sandals...away. There are plenty of comfortable shoes out there, so go investigate (and by comfortable shoe I do not mean sneakers). Live a little, go to a real shoe store and invest in your feet. The tapered, shorter length pant is pretty hip right now, paired with some funky socks, and you cannot skimp on the shoe.
Well I'm spent. This is more writing than I have done all Summer. Keep posted for sales and updates as they come in.
Missed you all...hugs and winky face.

Pink is Punk Rock...even in Crocs!
Being a parent is hard work...painstaking, actually. As a parent, we feel the highs and lows of our children, do our best to shelter them from pain, criticism, and lose sleep over how well they are getting on in life. We stress over whether or not they'll have friends, will they play a sport well, will they be smart, get into college?...will they be safe and listen to our advice about the dangers of drinking and driving, drugs, sex, and yes, rock and roll?...we all know it rots our brain. But the biggest fear many parents face is: Does my boy really want those hot pink crocs...huh?
My nine-year-old boy is a rockstar in his own mind. He wants to be an actor, he wants to play the electric guitar in a rock band, and yes, he wants to wear fuchsia crocs. As a mom, a stylist, and a lover of all that is pink, I say, "Go for it!", but as a realist, I fear he will be teased, called a girl, and his little heart will be broken. I have shared these fears with him and he is willing to "take the risk".
So this morning, I sent him off to school with his flooded jeans, tye-dyed hoodie and hot pink crocs. I, just in case, tucked his sneakers into his backpack. But while I was having my morning coffee, sending off an email to his teacher to please keep an eye on Noah, I was scrolling though the world news...maybe, just maybe, there are bigger things to worry about throughout my day? Perhaps.
Why do we put our own prejudices and fears onto our children? Why do we make color an issue in a world where we preach diversity? Why can't a boy wear pink and a girl like football? What does color have to do with gender, sexuality, popularity, and most of all, acceptance?
We live in a multi-colored world, and I hope as parents, we encourage our children to embrace all the colors of the world...not just the ones that feel safe.
Rock on, Noah! Rock on!

SAVE THE DRAMA FOR YOUR MAMA!
Listen up peeps! I have nothing but warm and fuzzies in my heart for you all...you know that, but it has been brought to my attention that some readers of my blog have been potty-mouthin' some of my featured retailers...check it: you are more than welcome and encouraged to speak your mind, but this blog isn't a one-way street.
I love and respect the local business owners I deal with here in Madison, and I have always been fairly and kindly treated. If you are going to say anything negative about a retailer, I will be sure to give the owner of that establishment the same chance to tell their side of the story...so here's the nutshell: if you can dish it, be ready to take it.
Play nice, people! There is enough sand for everyone.
So 2,000 people have visited my blog, yet I only have 29 followers
...WHAT? Please, if you read my blog, click "follow" and let me feel the love.....xoxoxox

How is your Spring Wardrobe??
If you are starting to stress about what to wear as the weather turns warmer, stress no more. I know I always have a small twinge of panic as I begin to transition from Winter to Spring/Summer garments.
Spring is one of the hardest seasons to dress, as shorts and our strappy dresses are not yet in season, but jeans and sweaters are way too hot. If you'd like some help sorting it all out, give me a call or shoot me an email, and I will be glad to lend a hand!

Father's Day at Context
So in reality, Father's Day is not "just around the corner"...it isn't. But when I saw this shirt at Context, I immediately thought of my own father-in-law who loves Florida, golf, and a well-made shirt. Haversack has created the perfect "Bruce Shirt"...Bruce being my father-in-law, but I better start saving for it now, and if you like it, you may want to start tucking away those pennies as well. Personally, I think it's worth the hefty price tag, but you can make that call on your own.

Sunny Sports at Context Clothing
From Context:
Japan based Sunny Sports makes some of the most thoughtfully designed menswear we've seen. Sunny Sports maintains a very quiet presence in the US, choosing only a handful of shops to present their carefully constructed garments. Their rising sun logo is a gentle nod to Western Americana and the laid back culture of sunny California. Unexpected details turn up in Sunny Sports playful approach to heritage manufacturing. Garments are produced in Japan and the USA. Stay tuned for Sunny Sports patterned slip on shoes.

Sofft at Boston Store
I'll admit it. I've fallen prey (more times than I care to count), to the fantastic but miserably uncomfortable heel. The boxes upon boxes of shoes in my closet will attest to it. I painfully hobble around, knowing they look incredible, fantasizing about the hour when I can kick them off and feel less like a victim of foot-binding.
But what are the options? Clogs? I think not. I happened upon Sofft's "Ramona" patent leather heels with a stacked platform; they made me gasp, hands over mouth. The Boston Store, West Towne, has these saviors of feet in three colors: black patent, cherry red patent, and taupe patent, all retailing for a little over $100.00 ...which is infinitely reasonable. You can also visit the Sofft website to sneak a peek at the Spring 2011 collection.

Artful Home
I have found a new obsession. It's not chocolate, not some fancy coffee drink, no, not even the truffle popcorn at Graze (although, those in the know are aware of my addiction). I have fallen in love with a guild...a what?
Artful Home is a guild that bridges artists who want to sell their work, with people who want to buy high quality art (no offense, but this isn't the art you'll find at local national franchises such as...well, you know). The art publishing company was founded in 1985, and has grown to over 10,000 pieces of art from over 1,200 artists, art galleries, and art print publishers (I'm getting this info from their "about us" webpage: http://www.artfulhome.com/servlet/Guild/AboutGuildPage)...just to cover the whole plagiarism thing. So if you want to read more, go ahead; I want to talk about the scarves.
In thinking about art, rarely does a person think, "scarf". But the scarves in Artful Home are works of art. I know..."It's just a scarf!" But no, no it isn't. See for yourself.

This is just a small sampling. Go to the website and poke around. I spent the better part of an hour looking through the apparel, the furniture, the paintings, the prints, the baskets, and everything else I was lucky enough to stumble across.

Karen & CO January Sale
Karen & CO are having their January sale starting this Friday, January 7th. I strongly advice you check it out (307-309 State Street, downtown Madison). This is a high-end boutique, and the clothing does not come cheap, but if you want to add a few garments (OK, maybe one) to your wardrobe, now would be the time to do it! The clothing at K&CO is not trendy, so holding on to something for next season is a perfectly reasonable idea. This is a two-day only sale, so plan a trip downtown tomorrow or Saturday...bring a girlfriend and have a drink afterward (invite me)...fun, fun.

Aveda
I have a secret. I hate cologne. Cologne for women, cologne for men, I hate it all.
Why? I have three good reasons: First, I am highly allergic. Second, it is often overused. Third, nothing smells sexier than a freshly washed body, sans faux pheromones.
Now I realize some readers are thinking: "Is she talking about me?"...Perhaps, but listen, it's a free country and you can wear what you want; I'll suffer through it. But if you're open to investigating an alternative that will enhance your natural scent and smell crazy sexy, listen up.
I am going to propose you check out Aveda's 100% natural "pure-fume" aromas. Aveda offers all natural scents and can even customize a scent for your body (I am partial to their custom oils). I prefer an oil because a little goes a long way, and throughout the day, the aroma intensifies instead of fades (unlike the bottle of expensive tonic you may be currently using).
I discovered these intoxicating aromas when a male friend of mine met me and my husband for a drink. He was wearing an Aveda concoction that drove me crazy. He smelled so damn sexy...my husband got a bottle the next day (smart man).
Sex appeal aside, natural oils have been said to help calm the mind, soothe the soul, and help with insomnia. Now am I saying you will have the same results? No. But there are literally thousands who will swear by them, and hey, who's to judge?
If you are out and about, pop into an Aveda salon (Hilldale Mall) or an Aveda retail store (West Towne Mall), and have a consultant work with you (you get a free massage out of the deal).
Remember, if your scent enters a room before you do, you may want to check out a natural oil. I bet you'll be surprised how beautiful you really smell.
